Cleaning a hardwood floor can be confusing especially with all the products advertised today, remember every product that says safe for hardwood floors is not always safe for hardwood floors. We recommend using the product made by the manufacturer of the flooring or finish product that was used on your hardwood floors. If you have a Bruce prefinished hardwood floor we recommend using Bruce hardwood floor cleaner which is a great product and wont cause problems when you need to recoat your floors. There are some great products out there such as Bruce,Basic Coatings, and Bona cleaners which are safe to use on your hardwood floors and as I said before wont cause problems when it comes time to recoat your floors.
Products you should never use on your hardwood floors,Orange Glo,Holloway House Quick Shine, Murphy Oil Soap,Vinegar and water,or any Ammonia based or wax based cleaners.Keep in mind what you clean your hardwood floors with determines what can be done to maintain your floors in the future,
cleaning your hardwood floors with some products can make it difficult,or even impossible to recoat your hardwood floors.Recoating a hardwood floor is a maintenance procedure not a fix all for worn out floors, I tell homeowners its like maintaining your vehicle, you keep the maintenance up to avoid the big expenditure of serious repair work. Your hardwood floors should be recoated when the initial signs of wear begin to show but not when the finish has been worn off,if your hardwood floors begin to show some wear or the finish begins to dull it is time for a recoat. This will vary for each home depending upon frequency of cleaning, usage of the rooms where the hardwood floors are installed.and the big one our pets.We have all heard keep those nails trimmed and we should this will keep the wear and scratches to a minimum.
